Digital Booktalks

Topic: Historical fiction, booktalks, The Great Depression. This lesson uses a digital booktalk to help students understand the severe impact that the Great Depression had on American life. It is a collaborative lesson to be taught between the classroom teacher and library media specialist to support classroom instruction. Students will be introduced to two historical fictions novels through a digital scrapbook page that incorporates primary source photos, video and audio. Using graphic inquiry of primary source photos, the students will search for and select

Topic: Native Americans, First Americans, Tribes, Geography. This lesson is an introduction to a Native Americans unit. Students will examine the environment of three main regions: Southwest,Eastern Woodlands, and
Plains. By identifying the natural resources available in each region, the students will infer and learn the homes, occupations, and types of transportation for each tribe and region. The information will be presented and reviewed
through the use of an interactive whiteboard, video, the Internet, and a digital camera.

Eyewitness Stories:The Real Truth

Topic: Story Elements, Character, Point of View, Fairy Tales. The students will identify the elements of character, plot, and point of view in short stories by pairing up into groups and rewriting a popular children’s fairy tale
from a different character’s point of view. After writing their stories, each pair will create a multimedia presentation using PhotoStory 3 that can then be used as podcasts or videos to share with the other schools for teaching

Fantastic Flower Functions

Topic: Flower Structure and Function. This lesson introduces flower structures and functions using video, a
PowerPoint Presentation and a digital microscope. Students will work in assigned roles to investigate and dissect
a flower, documenting the process with a digital camera. Students will review flower structures through virtual
flower dissection and show understanding of flower structure through creation of crossword puzzle using a website.

Good, the Bad and the Ugly,The:Managing Credit for Financial Fitness

Topic: Credit, interest rate, debit and credit cards. In this lesson, students will learn the real story of credit cards, how the use of credit cards can affect their lives, and how to establish their credit scores through the use of video
and online activities. Students will use an online simulator to determine the actual costs of items purchased with credit cards and learn how to make good decisions about the use of credit. Sorting Out Forms and Genres

Topic: Text forms, text features, and genres. Text form, structures, text features and genres are consistently interchanged and create confusion and frustration for students who navigate the various texts they are expected to know, understand, use and even evaluate throughout high school. In this lesson students will use hands-on activities, video, and websites to help them distinguish the elements of text form, text features, and genres and will use the distinctions to hypothesis what they might enjoy reading. To Be or Not to Be: Animals on the Brink of Extinction

Topic: Endangered species, animals, habitat, extinction. After researching an endangered mammal using teacherselected websites, students will choose a perspective to assume regarding the future of the animal. They will
work with a small group to create and film a public service announcement, interview, or news report about the animal. Students will use digital video cameras and video-editing software to prepare the movies, which will be

Topic: Animal adaptations, physical and behavior adaptations. Students will use video and online digital books to learn ways animals use their physical structure or how they change their behavior to adapt to the habitat and environment

Unlocking Igneous Rocks

Topic: Igneous Rocks, Rock Cycle. Students will examine igneous rock samples and infer how they were formed based on their observations. Students will then research igneous rocks using Google Custom Search to identify
their rock sample and learn how it is formed, which gives it unique characteristics. Finally, students will create a clay reenactment of the formation of each igneous rock sample which will be turned into a book through digital pictures and script. Topic: Place Value of Greater Numbers—Thousands, Ten Thousands, and Hundred Thousands. After learning place value positions up to 1,000, students will investigate the place value positions of ten thousands and hundred
